Power Supply Metal Case Housing

The metal casing of a power supply is a crucial structural protection component for power equipment. Many people simply understand it as a metal shell, but it plays a vital role not only in enclosing internal components but also in heat dissipation, electromagnetic shielding, and structural protection. It is widely used in switching power supplies, industrial power supplies, adapters, photovoltaic power supplies, and various industrial control power supply equipment. Whether for original equipment manufacturer (OEM) assembly or aftermarket replacement, market demand is substantial.

In the field of electromagnetic compatibility (EMC), the mechanism of the metal casing is far more complex than heat dissipation. According to electromagnetic field theory, a conductive, continuous, and grounded metal cavity constitutes a typical Faraday cage structure. This structure effectively suppresses the outward radiation of differential-mode and common-mode interference generated by the high-frequency switching action of the switching power supply, while also blocking the coupling interference of external electromagnetic fields to sensitive internal circuits. It is worth noting that the shielding effectiveness of the casing depends not only on the conductivity of the material but also on the integrity of the structure. The conductive gaskets at the seams, the spacing of the screws, and the insulation properties of the surface coating all significantly affect the overall shielding effectiveness. In compliance testing for CE, FCC, or CISPR standards, the grounding strategy of the casing is often one of the core variables determining the test results.

Common base materials on the market are mainly cold-rolled steel sheets and aluminum alloys, with stainless steel used in some customized projects. The practical differences between these materials are quite significant. Cold-rolled steel shells offer controllable costs, good structural strength, and strong impact resistance, making them suitable for mass production of general industrial power supplies. Aluminum alloy shells offer superior heat dissipation, are lighter, and offer more surface treatment options, making them a preferred choice for high-power power supplies. Stainless steel is mostly used in humid and corrosive environments, offering superior rust resistance, but at a higher cost.

Its most direct function is physical protection. The internal circuit boards, capacitors, and terminals of a power supply are very fragile. The metal shell can block external impacts and gravel strikes, and also reduce dust and debris falling directly onto the circuit board surface, lowering the risk of short circuits. In complex environments such as workshops and outdoor cabinets, the protective value of the shell is even more pronounced, preventing accidental damage to internal components and indirectly extending the overall lifespan of the power supply.

Heat dissipation and electromagnetic shielding are two core performance characteristics that are easily overlooked. High-power power supplies continuously generate heat during operation. If this heat cannot be dissipated in time, it can easily cause components to overheat and degrade, or even trigger protective shutdowns. A metal casing acts as a heat sink, transferring internal heat to the outside air. Some casings also have pre-drilled ventilation holes or slots to further improve heat dissipation efficiency. In addition, the metal casing forms a shielding layer, reducing the leakage of electromagnetic interference generated during power supply operation and blocking external electromagnetic signals from interfering with the internal circuitry, ensuring stable output voltage and current. This is especially important for powering industrial control and precision equipment.

The choice of surface treatment directly determines the durability and appearance of the casing. Conventional spraying and powder coating treatments provide rust and oxidation prevention while enriching the casing's color options. Anodizing is often used for aluminum alloy casings, offering higher hardness, wear and scratch resistance, and a matte finish. Other treatments include galvanizing and brushing. Customers can choose according to their usage environment and aesthetic requirements. Processing methods include stamping, bending, and welding, as well as supporting drilling and slotting, and pre-drilling wiring ports and switch positions to meet the assembly needs of different power supply circuit boards.

One important point to note is that the metal casing must be properly grounded during assembly; otherwise, there is a risk of electrical leakage. This is an essential step in the assembly process. It is not recommended to cut or modify the finished casing yourself, as improper processing can create metal burrs that can easily scratch internal wiring and cause malfunctions.

Many purchasing customers only consider whether the casing size matches, neglecting material and manufacturing standards. This often results in casings that rust easily, have poor heat dissipation, and fail to provide adequate shielding. We can provide standard specifications in stock, and we also support custom orders based on drawings or samples. Dimensions, opening positions, and surface treatments can all be adjusted to your needs. If you have purchasing or customization requirements, please feel free to contact us for further discussion.
